Meet Our Administrators

L. Cherry Daniel, Ed.D.

Executive Director

Dr. Daniel previously worked at the South Carolina Department of Education as the State Director for Adult and Community Education, implementing the GED online prep program and virtual high school diploma courses. She also served on the initial SC Virtual School Task Force. During her tenure, South Carolina received incentive funds from the U.S. Department of Education as a result of meeting and exceeding academic student performance indicators. In 1999, the U.S. Department of Education selected Dr. Daniel's community education program as one of the top ten programs in the United States. She has authored numerous articles in referred journals, developed a statewide professional development plan for teachers and administrators, is a certified grant writer and reviewer, and served as an adjunct professor at Charleston Southern University and The University of Charleston.

Dr. Daniel taught eleven years in both private and public schools at the middle and high school levels. While serving as a Director in Dorchester County School, she established the school district's first alternative school. She also served as the assistant superintendent in Colleton County School district before joining the South Carolina Department of Education.

Dr. Daniel holds a B.S. in Secondary Education from The College of Charleston, an M.Ed., in School Administration, an Education Specialist degree from The Citadel and a doctorate in Education Leadership from South Carolina State University. She presently serves on The College of Charleston Board of Trustees (Academic Affairs committee chair) and The Lowcountry Graduate Center (elected Vice Chair), and was appointed by Governor Mark Sanford to serve on the South Carolina Workforce Investment Board. In 2007, Governor Mark Sanford awarded Dr. Daniel the Silver Crescent award as a result of her exemplary work in public education.

Eric Childers

Secondary Principal

Eric Childers serves as High School Principal for SCVCS. Mr. Childers received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina and an M.Ed. from
Converse College.

Mr. Childers taught all levels and courses of science in both Union and Cherokee Counties before entering administration. He has served as Director of Adult Education in Union County, Coordinator of Applied Technology, Principal of Lockhart Schools, and most recently the Principal of Sims Middle School.

Mr. Childers has been involved in the AdvancEd Accreditation process and has served on several school/district visitation teams.


Anita Hart Maness

K-5 Principal

Anita H. Maness serves as K-5 Principal for the South Carolina Virtual Charter School.  Mrs. Maness holds a B.A. in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education from Columbia College.  She holds an M.Ed. from the University of South Carolina in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Administration.  She also holds certification as a Reading Teacher.

Mrs. Maness has spent forty-three years as a teacher and administrator in the South Carolina public school system.  She has taught grades kindergarten through grade six in all subject areas, and has served as a principal for thirty-one years.  At the district level, she has served as the Title One Coordinator and also the Coordinator of Early Childhood Education.  At the college level, she has served as an Adjunct Professor at Winthrop University. 

 Mrs. Maness also has been involved in the AdvancEd Accreditation process and has served on several visiting teams.

Anita Latham, Ed.S.

Assistant Executive Director, Middle School Principal

Ms. Latham, Director of Student Services, holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of South Carolina, an M.Ed. in Secondary Guidance and Counseling from Winthrop University and an Ed.S. in Secondary Administration and Supervision from Converse College.

Prior to joining SCVCS, Ms. Latham has spent 30 years as an educator in the SC public school system serving as a middle school teacher and a middle and high school guidance counselor. She also has taught at the SC Department of Corrections. She has held the positions as Director of Guidance at Union High School, and Assistant Principal and Principal of Birchwood School at the SC Department of Juvenile Justice. Ms. Latham has been involved in Advanced accreditation and has served on accreditation committees.

Renee Mathews

Consultant for Accountability

Mrs. Mathews has more than 32 years of experience in all facets of education from teacher to superintendent. She has served as a superintendent, deputy superintendent, chief academic officer, high school principal, elementary principal and elementary and high school assistant principal. She has served as the founding principal and director of SC’s first Chinese Language Immersion Public Charter School.

Some of her other achievements include: South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) Executive Board, AdvancEd (Accreditation) Quality Assurance Review Team Vice-chairman, SC Counseling Association Outstanding Administrator Award, Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Kappa President, District II Director and Alpha Vice-President, Ft. Jackson US Army Partners in Education Advisory Board, and the College of Charleston School of Education Advisory Board.
